7/12/11 Juneau Community Themes and Strengths Assessment Subcommittee meeting minutes

The community themes and strength assessment answers the following questions:
·         What is important to our community?
·         How is quality of life perceived in our community?
·         What assets do we have that can be used to improve community health?
We reviewed the following existing documents:
·         2009 Capital forum list
·         Out of School Plan
·         Middle School Afterschool Coalition report
·         United Way COMPASS II 2005
·         CBJ Housing Needs Assessment
·         2011 Homeless Connect Event Survey Data
·         JEDC 2010 Juneau Economic Indicators
·         Juneau YRBS 2009
Pending documents to review:
·         2011 Juneau Community Indicators
·         2009 Current Status Child Care
·         Best Beginnings Assessment
·         Assets survey by Association of School Boards
·         Senior Needs Assessment
Some themes/Strengths Identified:
·         Coalitions/Groups
·         Facilities/Infrastructure (fitness, arts, etc.)
·         Transportation
·         Nature/environment (including trails, etc.)
·         Educational infrastructure
·         Access to health care
·         Affordable housing
·         Better mental health services
·         More jobs/higher wage (seafood industries, fishing, tourism, government, mining, health care, etc.)
·         Affordable energy (hydropower)
·         Quality & quantity child care
The followings are more areas/population groups we would like to research to answer the important three questions:
·         Active coalitions/groups/neighborhood association/business association
·         Existing programs/activities for Juneau people
·         Food
·         Violence prevention/intervention
·         Senior
·         Adolescent
·         Youth
·         Young children/infant
·         Culture
·         Immigrants
·         Adult
·         Connection to outside world

Next meeting 8/16/11 at 2pm at Juneau Public Health Center 1F conference room
Everyone will research data and share summary at next meeting.
Everyone will think of gaps in data and ways to collect data to answer three questions:
  • What is important to our community?
  • How is quality of life perceived in our community?
  • What assets do we have that can be used to improve community health?

Community Health Status Assessment Subcommittee meeting minutes 6/27/11

We reviewed findings and synopsis for each category:

  1. Demographic Characteristics  – aging population, more diversity, report shared
  2. Socioeconomic Characteristics  - pending report
  3. Health Resource Availability – divide between people with access and without access, there are a lot of people who don’t get to medical care, report shared
  4. Quality of Life – report shared
  5. Behavioral Risk Factors  – report shared
  6. Environmental Health  - report shared
  7. Social and Mental Health - report shared
  8. Maternal and Child Health   - some data was not local, pending report
  9. Death, Illness, and Injury  – leading cause of death, injury, cancer, heart disease, pending report
  10. Communicable Disease  – was not able attend, pending report
  11. Sentinel Events - pending report
We discussed about next steps:
  • Combine all data into a health profile
  • Review the health profile & make comments
  • Disseminate the health profile and findings for the community
  • Discuss indicators to monitor in future and identify challenges
We also talked about Juneau Commission on Sustainability and their sustainability indicators. This might be good information for Juneau MAPP to review.

Next Juneau MAPP Community Health Status Assessment subcommittee meeting - 2-4pm on 9/12/11 at United Way of Southeast Alaska.

A draft of Juneau Health Profile will be shared with our group members 1-2 weeks before the meeting. Please be prepared to give comments regarding data/findings.
