• Juneau MAPP and Community Themes and Strength Assessment (CTSA) Overview 

The community themes and strength assessment answers the following questions:

• What is important to our community?
• How is quality of life perceived in our community?
• What assets do we have that can be used to improve community health?

Some communities start from no data. However, Juneau has many data available. We will first review these data to answer these three questions. Also, looking at the vision statement and Vision Meeting Wordle, we will explore other ways to gather missing data.

We will continue to look for possible grants and fundings for future MAPP effort.
Our Funding wish list: Community meeting locations, refreshments, advertisement, Community assessment tools, such as camera, etc., Website setup & maintenance, Advertisement, radio PSA, printouts about MAPP, Booklet for data share, etc.

Next meeting 7/12/11 at 2pm at United Way of Southeast Alaska

• Everyone will review data and share summary at next meeting.
• Everyone will think of gaps in data and ways to collect data to answer three questions: What is important to our community? How is quality of life perceived in our community? What assets do we have that can be used to improve community health? For example, there was an idea of photovoice by Youth.

Overview of the Steps for this assessment

1. Review available data
2. Determine the most effective approaches to gather information from a cross-section of the community - community meetings, focus groups, windshield surveys, individual discussions, or interviews.
3. Implement activities that gather community themes and strengths and engage the community in the MAPP process. Gather feedback on quality of life issues and community assets.
4. Compile the results. List issues, potential solutions, and assets.

·    Local Public Health System Assessment – possible in late Summer Focuses on all of the organizations and entities that contribute to the public's health. The LPHSA answers the questions: "What are the components, activities, competencies, and capacities of our local public health system?" and "How are the Essential Services being provided to our community?"

·    Community Health Status Assessment –  next meeting 4/25 at 2pm at United Way of Southeast Alaska
     Identifies priority community health and quality of life issues. Questions answered include: "How healthy are our residents?" and "What does the health status of our community look like?"

·    Forces of Change Assessment – meet after other 3 assessments are done

focuses on identifying forces such as legislation, technology, and other    impending changes that affect the context in which the community and its public health system operate. This answers the questions: "What is occurring or might occur that affects the health of our community or the local public health system?" and "What specific threats or opportunities are generated by these occurrences?"

What's Next?

Now that we have created a vision, it is time to take the next turn on our community road map to health; assessment! MAPP brings 4 unique and comprehensive assessments together to drive the development of a community strategic plan 

• The Community Themes and Strengths Assessment identifies themes that interest and engage the community, perceptions about quality of life, and community assets.
• The Local Public Health System Assessment measures the capacity of the local public health system to conduct essential public health services.
• The Community Health Status Assessment analyzes data about health status, quality of life, and risk factors in the community.
• The Forces of Change Assessment identifies forces that are occurring or will occur that will affect the community or the local public health system.

Thank you for being a part of this process and for understanding that it will take time for this body to produce meaningful and sustainable change. All of this communication, research and planning is crucial to our success. 

3/16/11 Meeting: Vision Statement

Vision statement (via Wikipedia): Defines the desired or intended future state of an organization or enterprise in terms of its fundamental objective and/or strategic direction. Vision is a long-term view, sometimes describing how the organization would like the world to be in which it operates. For example, a charity working with the poor might have a vision statement which reads "A World without Poverty."

At the 3/16 meeting the following was produced to serve as our vision statement for a healthy Juneau: 

A Thriving Community – Engaging a diverse and intergenerational population and ensuring access to an exceptional quality of life.
